PRESS RELEASE: UNICEF support for promotion of children¢s rights in the context of Montenegro¢s integration into the EU

Minister of European Affairs Aleksandar Andrija Pejović received today an inaugural visit from the newly appointed head of the UNICEF Representation in Montenegro Osama Makkawi Khogali.

The collocutors exchanged opinions regarding the achieved results, but also regarding the needs for continued cooperation between Montenegro and UNICEF towards further improvement of the situation and reaching European and international standards in the area of social and child protection.

MEPMinister Pejović thanked the UNICEF Office for the substantial support in the implementation of the reforms that contributed to the achievement of good results by Montenegro in the area of protection of children¢s rights, expressing his firm belief that continued joint work will make the progress in the areas of child protection, education, and social inclusion even
greater. In this context, the Minister expressed full readiness of Montenegro to contribute, through continued cooperation with UNICEF and other international organisations, and further work, particularly with respect to alignment with the best European and global practices, to further improvement of policies and in the area of education and social protection. The Minister particularly stressed the importance of protection of rights of children belonging to vulnerable groups, i.e., their inclusion in the society, pointing out the activities such as the campaign to end violence against children and the program of social inclusion of children with disabilities.   

Head of the UNICEF Representation Khogali congratulated the host on the successes that Montenegro has been making in the process of EU accession, particularly in the area of rule of law and social policy, noting that these are reflected in the policies and the situation in the area of protection of children¢s rights. He noted that he will dedicate his tenure to the strengthening of cooperation and partnership with all institutions and organisations with the aim of promoting the rights and position of children in Montenegro.

The collocutors agreed on the joint activities in the forthcoming period on considering the EU acquis covering children¢s rights, organisation of conferences, campaigns and projects improving children¢s rights.
